CBSE’s stress helpline gets calls all day
NEW
DELHI: CBSE's helpline is ringing off the hook but counsellors responding to
complaints of exam stress , wish schools , families and students started
earlier and not in January.
"I
had a maternal grandmother calling me from Hyderabad," says counselling
psychologist Geetanjali Kumar , "She has been teaching her grandson but he
keeps forgetting his lessons." That's a common complaint of the
examstressed .Most queries on the board's helpline (1800 11 8004 ), says an
attendant asking to not be named ,have to do with admit cards , date-sheets ,
and candidates forgetting their lessons.
"The
number of callshasincreased drastically this year," says Kumar. "I
have had calls from Bulandshahr and Varanasi asking mefor tipsto get 90
%." In many cases , Kumar finds herself asking candidates to tweak their
expectations. "Be realistic. If you got 56% in your pre-boards, 90 % in
the main examsis notlikely," she says.
Kumar
also asks some parents to back off. She mentions one student who opted for
science not because she was interested but because she had the marks for it.
"Parents want to ease the stress but don't know what to do. I told the
father to read up on future career paths by himself and leave the girl to study
on her own." Career counselling by coaching centresfor professional
courses, she feels, do moreharm than good.
But
most counsellors feel schools and parents should teachthekidstodealwithstress
from the start . Teaching them tohandletests along withbirthday parties and
family get-togethersisonewayof doing it.
The
CBSE website has a handbook on handling exam stress. It begins by recommending
a healthy diet. "The right food can help in your levels of concentration ,
ensure that you sleep soundly and lower your anxiety level ." Exercise-
"aerobic-cardiovascular type" - is recommended asisenoughsleep . e
